![]() It makes for a satisfying collection as a whole, and all the stories individually are cute and quick reads. ![]() Although there are similar elements across all of them-most of them are about new romances, and most of the couples are heterosexual and implied white-they have variations in genre and age: the youngest protagonists are in high school while the oldest is hitting menopause, a few of the stories are fantasy while others contemporary, and some are decidedly set in particular years (although not so far back that they’d be traditionally called historical fiction) while others are more universally contemporary. Scattered Showers is a collection of nine short romances, three of which feature existing characters from Rowell’s past work and six of which are entirely new. Plus, it has several stories that tie into Rowell’s novels, so it is an opportunity to reunite with old favorite characters, chief amongst them Simon and Baz from the Carry On trilogy. ![]() Rainbow Rowell is one of those, and her new story collection Scattered Showers is the sort of beautiful book-it has stained edges!-that is a nice addition to a bookshelf even if it isn’t necessarily one you’d read over and over again. ![]() I’m not usually one for short story collections or romance, but there are a few writers I like well enough that I’ll try pretty much anything they write. ![]()
